Try Something New Everyday

We can all find ourselves slipping into a routine in the different areas of our life. It can take the pressure off us, knowing that parts of our life are done on auto-pilot, without having to think about them too much. If we find that the days are passing by into weeks and months it can be important to intercept that routine and do something new, add some variety into our life. It doesn't have to be stressful, just enough to remind us that each day is precious and is worth investing some effort into.
- Get up at a different time some days. Getting up a little earlier can make a big difference to the time available in the day. It may provide the opportunity to sit and eat breakfast, travel in a less rushed way to your destination, result in you feeling more relaxed and less stressed at the start of the day. It may provide a few minutes to quietly do some work before others arrive or be able to sit and settle into the day to come. Getting up a little later occasionally can give an extra lie-in, feel a little indulgent, enjoy a more leisurely start to the day.
- Travel a different way to work. Maybe take a different route, take public transport instead of the car. Get off a stop earlier and walk if it's a nice day. This enables you to become more aware of your surroundings, notice the people, buildings, vegetation around you. It can be an eye-opening experience.
- Eat something different. Many of us automatically eat the same or similar things as a matter of course. It's often easier to avoid thinking too hard about what we want to buy, eat or cook. Trying something different can be a risk, but even if we don't like it we are not likely to die of starvation. Many people say that they don't like something but then reveal that they haven't tried it. Commit to occasionally being more adventurous with your food.
- Have a go. Sometimes people ask for volunteers or ask if anyone wants to join in with something new. Say 'yes' and have a go. Whether it be social or work related, having a go can introduce you to new people, new experiences and new opportunities. And that can't be a bad outcome from simply investing a little time.
- Ask someone out for a coffee. Make a new friend by asking someone you've smiled at, perhaps occasionally chatted to, out for a coffee. Keep it low-key, but make an effort and spend an hour talking, listening, sharing, with someone who could potentially become a new friend.
- Buy yourself a treat. It doesn't have to cost much money, but buying yourself something that you would not normally consider for yourself is important. Perhaps a glossy magazine, a bunch of flowers, a bubble bath, something that may seem a little indulgent is an important message to yourself. It is good to treat yourself well and do something new and unexpected.
Doing something new reminds us that we are not just going through the motions of living everyday. It is important to give ourselves a reminder that we do have some choices available to us. Exercising those choices can improve our quality of life and help us to feel more positive and receptive to the options available to us and what we do with our time
